Figure Drawing Marathon at Palette and Chisel

At the Palette and Chisel Watercolor

This New Year's Day I spent the day drawing and painting figure  models from life at the Palette and Chisel in Chicago. It was a solid day of working in an old mansion converted into studio and gallery spaces in the Gold Coast section of Chicago. It was a great opportunity to work directly from the figure surrounded by other artists who were doing the same thing. I used a set of Schmincke watercolors. Lately I have been using a set of St. Petersburg watercolors. they are both good quality paints, but the colors are noticeably different, especially the blue hues.

Wedding Sketches

I brought my sketchbook and markers to a family wedding New Year's Eve. These quick sketches capture the mood.

New Ideas with Old Materials

Nets 1, Collagraph over watercolor. Hand-coloring prints is an old technique. This weeks I have reversed the process and printed on top of watercolors. My first piece suggest and aerial view of land and sea and nets being flung.

Watercolors from Figure Drawing Sessions

Lately I have been combining watercolor markers with wet watercolor. The following drawing started as a dry marker cityscape. It was a very misty morning and I misted the drawing to get the following results.

Dry marker drawing on watercolor paper of St. Michael's church in Chicago.

Here is the same drawing after the water spray.

Estonian Windmills

This relief print is of the windmills I photographed two years ago in Estonia. The left is Estonian style. The building is rectangular and the whole structure is turned manually when the wind shifts. The windmill on the right is the kind that Van Gogh pictured.

New Work New Exhibit

I have been contuing my experiments with collographs ( or  collagraphs, both are correct). The latest have been made with just cut paper on top of good quality paper. I notice that it is easier to work with scissors than with an Exacto knife.

I have also coninued with oil portraits. Pictured are some examples. Most are on display at the Bartlett Viallage Hall gallery during the month of June. The reception is scheduled for 6:30 on June 21. The exhibit is sponsored by Arts In Bartlett.
